These pieces are shaped using a variety of tools. The initial inspiration for the form usually comes from the wood itself. The unique grain patterns and raw shape of the wood must be considered as well as the ultimate home for the piece. Initial shaping can sometimes be done with a small chainsaw, or heavy duty grinding tools. These tools must be used with a deft hand to remove the excess material without detracting from the natural beauty. Progressively finer sanding combined with hand carving and filing bring the sculpture to its finished shape. The final step is to polish with many coats of oil.
