This is a piece of Sugar Maple which has developed its grain colour and markings through the process of 'spalting'. This is basically the very beginning the decaying process. When the wood is lying on the damp forest floor, bacteria and enzymes can work away, causing dramatic colour stains and dark lines. If the wood is dried out before the stage of becoming too soft, it can be worked and finished very well. Once wood is dried and finished, of course the decaying process is stopped.
