Turning a Large Bowl

After the blank has been roughed out using a chainsaw, the piece is mounted on the lathe and the outside is turned first.

The next step is to reverse the piece on the lathe and hollow out the inside. The wood is left with fairly thick walls and put aside for a period of up to eight months to dry out. When the drying is complete, it is returned to the lathe for final shaping to the desired form.
